Oxford County
A Safer Place For Your Waste
The County of Oxford is holding its first waste collection event of 2012 in Woodstock on Saturday, May 5. The collection event kicks off a series of half-day, weekend drop-off locations where Oxford County residents can more safely and conveniently dispose of hazardous household waste and recyclable materials like paint, tires, electronics, scrap metal and other environmentally sensitive items.
MAY 5: WOODSTOCK City of Woodstock Public Works Yard 944 James St 8:00 am – 12:00 Noon
MAY 12: TILLSONBURG Town of Tillsonburg Public Works Yard 20 Spruce St 8:00 am – 12:00 Noon
JUNE 2: INGERSOLL CAMI Automotive 300 Ingersoll St 8:00 am – 12:00 Noon
SEPT 15: WOODSTOCK City of Woodstock Public Works Yard 944 James St 8:00 am – 12:00 Noon
Hazardous household waste is garbage not collected through regular curbside pick up because it is corrosive, toxic or otherwise dangerous to people or the environment. Oxford County Public Works uses special handling to dispose of these materials, which include paint and solvents, motor oil, batteries, antifreeze, sharps, fluorescent lighting, household cleaners and pesticides, as well as electronics, tires without rims, scrap metal and old appliances.
The waste collection depots do not collect PCB waste, asbestos, radioactive waste, flares or fireworks, pathological waste, small appliances or regular household garbage. They are also not intended for commercial or industrial customers.
Diverting waste from landfill is a key goal of the County’s garbage and recycling program. Last year, Public Works diverted over 25,000 tonnes of waste from landfill.
Residents who miss one of the collection events can still dispose of their hazardous household waste safely year round at the County landfill at 384060 Salford Road (County Road 46), east of Salford. The Salford landfill is also a drop-off depot for blue box recycling items. For information on hours and to check what you can bring to the Salford landfill, vist www.oxfordcounty.ca.
Quotes:
“A safe and convenient way to dispose of waste is available to residents year round through the different services we offer at the Salford Landfill. Public Works uses the special collection events as an opportunity to remind people that there some types of waste that are not safe to put into their regular garbage or down the drain, and that the County provides these services so people have an environmentally preferred option.”
- Pamela Antonio, Waste Management Coordinator, County of Oxford
Quick Facts:
- In 2011 Oxford County diverted 170 tonnes of electronic waste from landfill.
- Needles and sharps should be placed in a secured plastic container for safe disposal at a collection event or the County’s household hazardous waste depot. These items can harm workers and can spread diseases.
- Don’t place hazardous material in your garbage or recycling bins as they may react with one another causing toxic fumes and or fire to occur.
