Ontario Helping Families Stay Safe While They Grill

The Victoria Day holiday weekend marks the unofficial start of barbecuing season. To help people protect themselves and their homes before firing up the grill, Ontario is offering important tips on barbecue and propane safety.

Tips include:
  • Barbecues should be inspected and cleaned at least once a year, preferably before the first use.
  • Always use propane barbecues outdoors and at least three meters from a house or tree. Grilling in the garage, even with the door open, is a no-no.
  • To prevent excessive propane build-up, light the match before turning on the gas. For barbecues with electronic igniters, follow the directions on the control panel.
  • Always keep children and pets away from barbecues.
  • When done, make sure the barbecue and gas supply are turned off, the burner flames are out and the barbecue has cooled completely before closing the cover.

Helping Ontario consumers make smart and safe choices is part of the McGuinty government's commitment to inform and protect Ontario families.

Quotes:

"Many of us enjoy barbecuing during the warm weather. By following simple tips we can barbecue safely and protect our families and friends from potential and unnecessary injuries."

- Margarett Best, Minister of Consumer Services

Quick Facts:
  • Barbecues emit carbon monoxide and should be used outside only.
  • Propane cylinders must be re-certified or replaced every 10 years.
