Perth County: Renew your New Year Resolutions!

With January being the month of resolutions as well National Non-Smoking Week - which takes place January 15 to 21- people may have quitting smoking on their mind. Perth County residents can gain extra motivation to kick their tobacco addiction with the seventh annual Driven to Quit Challenge, hosted by the Canadian Cancer Society.

Contest Details

Individuals who stay smoke-free for the month of March can be eligible to win their choice of a 2012 Ford Fusion or Ford Edge. There are also two $5,000 CAA travel vouchers and seven $2,000 cash prizes to be won. One cash prize is reserved for a resident in the Southwest region.

Ontarians aged 19 and older who have smoked for at least 10 months in the year 2011 can enter. Each entrant must sign up with a support buddy, who stands to win $200 cash. To be eligible for the prize draw, participants must register by February 29, then stay smoke-free for all of March 2012.

The 2011 Grand Prize Winner

Last year’s Driven to Quit Challenge grand prize winner, Brian Perkins, traded his thirty year relationship with cigarettes for some new connections. “The biggest help was being online on Facebook, reading comments, getting feedback from other people quitting,” said Perkins, who is still smoke-free. “Being able to form relationships with other people who understand what you are going through is a big help.”

Quit Support

To support those making a quit attempt, registrants may contact the Perth District Health Unit to receive free, one-to-one counselling through the Stop Smoking Clinic, as well as access self-help resources.  The Driven to Quit Challenge community can also be found online at www.facebook.com/smokershelpline and www.twitter.com/smokershelpline.

Registration closes February 29, 2012. To register and for details about The Driven to Quit Challenge, Ontarians can visit www.driventoquit.ca. Registration forms are also available at all Health Unit locations.
