Perth District Health Unit
Male and Female Volunteers Needed to Mentor Perth County Youth
The Perth District Health Unit is looking for adult males and females who would like to make a difference in the lives of pre-teens in Perth County. Volunteers will participate in the Teen Esteem and Elements programs, which are unique, school-based programs for grade 7 and 8 youth.
Adult female volunteers will be part of the Teen Esteem program for girls. Adult males will be part of the Elements program for boys. Each program is based on a mentorship model. Volunteers do activities with small groups of youth while also sharing their own life experiences and career choices.
“These teens are eager to connect with adults who show an interest in their lives,” says Karen Dowling, Public Health Nurse. “Every year we receive very positive feedback from both the youth participating and from the volunteers about their experience working in these programs.”
Volunteers visit a school once a week for a one-hour workshop during lunchtime. Teen Esteem is a 7-week program and Elements runs for 5 weeks. Volunteers receive orientation and training by a Public Health Nurse who is also available at every session to offer guidance and support.
This fall, the programs will be offered at these schools:
- Holy Name of Mary (St. Marys)
- St. Patrick’s (Kinkora)
- Stratford Central
- Listowel Central
Teen Esteem has been offered for nine years in Perth County. The program is operated by the Perth District Health Unit with financial support from the Zonta Club of Stratford. Elements has been offered for six years.
On Stage Dance Studio of Stratford is a supporter of both the Teen Esteem and Elements programs.
