Service Description: Adoption in Ontario can be carried out in four different ways, through:

1. One of the Children's Aid Societies in Ontario, generally involving Crown wards of the province, who are available for adoption;

2. Licensed private adoption agencies or individuals licensed by the Ministry, generally involving Ontario infants whose parents have decided that adoption is the best option for them;

3. The courts in the case of the adoption of Ontario children by their relatives or step-parents ("relative" is limited to the child's grandparent, great-uncle, great-aunt, uncle or aunt);

4. Licensed international adoption agencies who are authorized to place children from different countries.

Application: Children's Aid Society adoptions: Call the nearest CAS Private adoptions: Contact a licensed private adoption agency or individual. A list of all licensees, licensed agencies, and adoption practitioners approved to conduct home studies is available from the Ministry's Adoption Unit and on the website. Adoption by a relative: Make an application to an Ontario court under the CFSA. Information about the new Rules and Forms is available from the Internet at www.ontariocourts.on.ca. A licensed private adoption agency or individual or a lawyer can be used. International adoptions: All persons adopting a child from another country must use the services of an Ontario licensed adoption service provider. A list of all licensees, licensed agencies, and adoption practitioners approved to conduct home studies is available from the ministry's Adoption Unit and on the website. Eligibility - Population(s) Served: To adopt in Ontario, you must be 18 years of age or older and be a resident of Ontario. To qualify, you will have to: * Have a home study completed; * Complete a training course on parenting an adopted child called PRIDE (Parent Resource for Information, Development and Education); now mandatory for all CAS, private and international adoptions.
