Thames Valley Children's Centre

Thames Valley Children's Centre is the regional rehabilitation Centre serving children and youth with physical disabilities, communication, and developmental needs in 10 counties of Southwestern Ontario. We are a community-oriented Centre providing assessment, diagnosis, consultation and therapy. We serve more than 8,000 children, ranging from newborn to young adults, every year. Our research, creativity and innovations have made us pioneers in the treatment and management of disabilities and special needs.

Position:  Registered Nurse

Region:  London and Middlesex

Description:  We are recruiting for a part time (18.75 hours per week), regular Registered Nurse to fill a vacancy in the position of Nurse Clinician in Clinical and Technical Specialty Services, Clinic. This position is expected to begin in February 2018.


  • Conduct assessments and provide education and support to families and children attending clinic and individual appointments (in areas including continence and bowel management, catheterization, medication use as prescribed by a physician, seizure management, feeding and personal health management)
  • Conduct on-going follow-up with and provide support to families by telephone
  • Review client records, assess needs, and advise team in preparation for clinics
  • Assist in connecting with appropriate community resources
  • Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team including families, therapists, multiple medical specialists, clinic assistants, and other agencies to assess and develop programs and offer education to client populations within our 10 county region
  • Develop information based resources and education for families and children
  • Develop and/or use multidisciplinary documentation and outcome measurement tools


  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required
  • Current certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current certification in First Aid and BCLS
  • Ability to apply knowledge, skills and judgment required for safe, independent and inter-disciplinary practice by meeting nursing practice standards as outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Experience working with children with disabilities and their families in an acute care, community or clinic setting using a family centered and strengths based approach
  • Strong competency in growth and development, neurological issues, neurogenic bowel and bladder, continence, enteral and oral feeding, complex care, and skin care
  • Knowledge of nursing issues related to Spina Bifida, Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, Neuromuscular Disorders, Rett Syndrome and other congenital and genetic conditions;
  • Demonstrated clinical assessment and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate health knowledge to children and their families in person, over the phone and through remote communication technology
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and time management skills
  • A strong interest in research and ability to critically review research findings
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a diverse team to achieve common goals
  • Computer proficiency including MS Office Suite 2010 package of software
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License and access to a vehicle are required
  • French Language proficiency is considered an asset
