United Way Establishes Huron-Perth Transportation Task Force

In response to the recent Social Research and Planning Council Report, “The Road Ahead – A study of transportation needs across Huron and Perth Counties”, May 2012, the United Way of Perth-Huron has established a dual county task force to address human transportation issues in our community. The group has been built with representation from municipal government and service providers with an aim to improve:

  • Access to services for all Huron and Perth Residents
  • Collaboration among service providers involved with transportation
  • Our connection with larger urban centres for social, recreational, educational and employment purposes
  • Access to employment opportunities
  • Access to a larger work force for employers

The committee will initially focus on gathering information from other communities, specifically on these topics: their public transportation systems; making even better use of available provincial gas tax funding; understanding existing agency transportation programs while seeking potential efficiencies; and supporting efforts to access ‘Go Service’ for Stratford. After the startup phase is complete, the task force will expand to include private sector employers, and private sector transportation providers.

Ryan Erb, Executive Director of the United Way Perth-Huron, said, “This is a critically important project for our community as the Social Research and Planning Council has already identified. We must find ways to improve access to services, employment and recreation for all residents in a way that is beneficial for service providers, employers, private sector transportation companies and individual community members.”

The group’s first meeting was held on October 2nd, 2012 in Seaforth and is in the midst of planning their future meeting schedule.
