Making Life Safer and Healthier for Thousands of Seniors

Since April over 100 local events in the Stepping Out Safely: Healthy Aging 2012 initiative have connected over 4,000 older adults with health promotion and disease prevention information to support healthy aging in London.

But they’re not done yet. To cap off this intensive education series, the wrap-up event on October 13 promises to deliver even more vital information to seniors mixed in with fun activities. From indoor kite flying and Nordic walking demonstrations, to yoga sessions, to relaxation and sleep advice the day is geared to promoting ways for seniors to enhance their quality of life.

“We are excited that so many seniors have participated in the promotion activities in the past few months,” says Amy Mak, Public Health Nurse at Middlesex-London Health Unit, and a member of the Stepping Out Safely Steering Committee. The finale event on October 13 will be like a big party with many fun activities to celebrate healthy aging.”

Other features of the day include music by In a Heartbeat and interpretation services for multicultural seniors.

Stepping Out Safely: Healthy Aging 2012 is supported by more than 50 community and business organizations to help older adults learn ways to stay healthy and prevent disease so they can maintain a good quality of life as they age. Each month has a theme including celebrating aging, physical activity, safety, nutrition and medicine clean out.

The organizations supporting Stepping Out Safely: Healthy Aging 2012 include the City of London, Council for London Seniors, Horton Street Seniors Centre, Middlesex-London Health Unit, Osteoporosis Canada, Third Age Outreach at St. Joseph’s Health Care London, and many community partners.
